Meet the Artist Jamie Orr

Jamie Orr is an abstract artist living and working in Rockaway Beach, New York. After graduating college with a double major in Psychology and Visual Arts, she pursued a master’s degree in behavioral psychology. Jamie enjoyed a 14-year career working with children and adults on the autism spectrum before making the decision to pursue art full time. She is one of our exhibiting artists at the group art show on September 4th at Rockaway Beach Surf Club.

How did you get started as an artist?

I’ve been drawn to art ever since I was a kid. I owe a lot to my mom for noticing that and for getting me into painting classes in elementary school. I ended up majoring in psychology and visual arts in college, but didn’t start even entertaining the idea of selling my work until grad school. Until a few years ago, I worked primarily as a therapist with kids with autism which was incredibly fulfilling, but there was always that whisper in the background telling me to follow my passion with art. During the pandemic, I finally took the leap towards becoming a full-time artist. It’s been a winding journey, but I finally feel like I’m doing what I’m meant to do.

How does spending time in nature, especially by the ocean, contribute to your mental well-being and creative process?

Being in nature is such a critical part of my life for mental, spiritual and physical well-being. It’s always amazing to me how taking a walk on the beach, going for a bike ride or surfing can change your mood, outlook and really, the whole trajectory of your day. My work is heavily inspired by my surroundings, so I’m constantly pulling colors or textures or even the feelings that I have when I’m out in nature into my work. If I ever feel stuck or un-inspired, I’ll make it a point to get out of the studio and get outside. Even something as simple as a pattern in the sand or the texture of a rock can be enough to inspire me to get back to work ☺

As an exhibiting artist at the 10th Annual Women's Surf Film Festival, what themes or messages do you aim to convey through your artwork?

Painting has always been a meditative and therapeutic process for me and I find that being out in nature complements my work in a tangible way. I’ve always hoped that my work brings that same feeling to those who experience it. I love the idea that my paintings might be the thing that prompts someone to stop, take a breath and come back to the present moment, just as being near/in the water does for me. Having the opportunity to paint a surfboard and a fin for the festival this year has been such an honor. It’s been such a fun challenge to merge my work and my inspiration in such a unique way.

How have the Rockaways and New York City influenced your artistic vision and connection to the surfing community?

I love the grittiness of Rockaway in contrast to the natural beauty that surrounds us here. That’s definitely found its way into my work through my use of texture contrasted with more flowing, subtle colors and movement. I love the push and pull between elements that are so different yet work so well together. Rockaway is this beautiful mix of art, culture, interesting people and natural beauty and I like to think all of that has become enmeshed in my paintings.

When you're not creating, what do you like to do for fun?

Anything active- surfing has been a big part of my life for the past 7 years or so. I love riding my bike, yoga, hiking visiting family in California, exploring new places, photography and spending time with my husband and cats.

Where can we see more of your art?
