Where did you grow up and where do you call home now?
We are both from different parts of Slovenia. Matic grew up in South West of Slovenia - Idrija, and Maja grew up in North East of Slovenia - Ptuj. We met in the capital - Ljubljana and after couple of years living there we decided to move to Gran Canaria - one of the Canary Islands in Spain - and this is our current home now.

How did you get started in filmmaking?
In Ljubljana we were both studying Graphic and Media Design, and we always had similar passions about photography and film. Soon after we met, we started to have common projects and we were both working in photography and film industry. After we moved to Canary Islands, so-called ‘European Hawaii’, surf documentary was an obvious project :)

What inspired SOFIA?
Ocean, sun, surfing, long days on the beach and beautiful Canary Islands.

How is this project different from your past projects?
Before we moved to Canary Islands, we never had any ocean projects, as we lived close to Mediterranean sea. We love art, nature and everything that’s connected to it, so it was always about people and nature.

How did you come to meet the surfer you feature in the film, Sofia?
We wanted to make surf documentary about a surfer from Canary Islands, so we literally went on Instagram to find one, and we found Sofía :)

The film is shot in the beautiful Canary Islands, can you tell us a little bit about the surf breaks you featured in the film?
Yes that’s true. Canary Islands are a part of Macaronesia situated in the Atlantic ocean quite near to Moroccan coast. In winter time, the waves here are the most powerful and the biggest. Some days up to 7 meters with insane power. Autumn is season with the most beautiful waves without wind and the summer is more for the beginners. But here on Canaries you can surf 365 days per year hehe. In our film Sofía we have some of the most famous breaks on Canary Islands. We mostly filmed on Tenerife during spring so conditions are not perfect but still ridable.

What do you hope the audience takes away from the film?
That more girls, women will try to surf because this is one of the most fun sports out there. Also we want to show the world a little bit about Canary Islands because for us it’s like a little paradise here.

Where do you find your personal inspiration?
Definitely in nature and of course in breaking waves. We could be on the beach and look at the ocean for the whole day. It’s so peaceful and mind clearing.

What can’t you live without when you travel?
We can’t be without discovering. You can travel on already written pattern from some blogs or books, but we prefer to write our own path.

What is next for you?
At the moment we are focusing on Wedding Videography and our goal is to travel as much as we can while we’re making the living out of the thing we love the most - film.
